1 milion cigarettes seized in Dover. 05 Marzec 2008
Nearly 1 milion of Sovereign cigarettes were seized on March the 3rd at the Observation Border Controls Dover, after they were discovered in a consignment of floor underlay, being transported on a british lorry heading to South Wales.
The haul had an excise duty value of almost£140.000 and had been tracked to Poland. No arrests has been made yet, but it’s been
reaveled thatinternational cigarettes
smuggling ring was involved in this proceder. Spokesman for HM Revenue and
Customs, said cigarette and tobacco smuggling was not "a harmless tax
fiddle." He added: "This type of activity costs the UK billions of
pounds in lost revenue that ends up lining the pockets of criminals instead of
funding vital public services." The government launched a £209m initiative
last March aimed at cutting the amount of tobacco smuggled into the country by
10% year on year over three years. As part of the initiative, 1,000 more
officers have been policing Britain's
ports and a £2m publicity campaign warning the public of the actual cost of
buying smuggled tobacco has been launched.
