Polish murder case may rumble on... 11 Grudzień 2007
A 'NIGHTMARE' investigation
into the murder of a Polish man in Rugby looks set to stretch into the
new year, it's been disclosed.
Warwickshire
Police has endured over a year's legal wrangling with Polish
authorities over their attempts to transfer Mariusz Szpyt for
questioning over the death of Ryszard Sawczyk.
Married father-of one Mr. Sawczyk died from stab wounds following an incident at his home in Evans Road, last October.
Det.
Supt. Ken Lawrence, who has been leading the investigation, said
'provisional' agreement had been made with Polish authorities to fly
Szpyt to the UK - but it could be well into 2007 before that happens.
He said: "We are making slow progress and it has been a nightmare covering international boundaries.
return
"But we have indications they will return him in 2007.
"I'm hoping that the situation will not change and the Poles will stand by that."
Mr. Sawczyk died following an incident at his house sometime overnight between October 18 and 19 last year.
His body was found in a burned out car in Somerset five days later.
A post-morten revealed he had died from stab wounds.
Szpyt was arrested in Poland last December and has been held in custody ever since.
Discussions
have continued throughout the year between the CPS and Polish
authorities over efforts to transfer Szpyt back to Britain, but no
agreement has been reached.
Det. Supt. Lawrence said there was no conclusive date for the go-ahead to bring Szpyt back for questioning.
He added the CPS would continue to press the Polish authorities for action.
